SUBPIiKSSKH NAMES.
.UTKLAND, May 22. The disadvantages of the suppression of the names of first oflemlers, charged with theft, were pointed out in a letter received at a meeting of the Ciumil of the Auckland Chamber uf Commerce. The writer of the letter was a merchant. who stated that in two eases of (hell from Ills warehouse, the names had been suppressed, and lie did mil think this was in the interest ol the business community. In one case, customer had been found stealing .roods early in the morning, when only ,*i feu members el the stall wor-t about. A' the name was suppressed other wholesalers were given no opportunity of watching the person concerned and preventing him front doing the same in their waarehouses. The writer had since been told by another wholesaler that he had ordeted ibis man out of his premises four years ago for the same tiling. Such facts as these should he known to all wholesalers. In a second ease, a member of tho staff, who was charged with thelt, bad been given probation for two years tittd bis name was suppressed. When detectives searched his home, a quantity of goods was found there. 'lhese were probably only those that he had Iteon unable to sell. If others were in league with him this leniency; not act as a deterrent to them, but would encourage them to go on. If discovered they would merely lose their jobs and not be faced with any publicity. It. was decided to investigate the matter further.
