EARTHQUAKE SHOCK
DISASTER IX JAI’AX. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION TOKIO, -May 23. \ severe earthquake is reported from Osaka. It occurred at 11.10 e’lTo-k in the morning. The people were terrified as Midi ; big earthquake had not been experienced in Osaka for a decade. The eitie.s of Kobe and Kyoto also felt a severe shock. However Tokio anil Yokohama were not affected. The .seismic centre is believed to he not far from Osaka. Communications wore not interrupted. So lar no damage is reported. TOKIO, -May 23. Later reports of the earthquake say that the latest advices show that the seriously affected area is contind tc the' province ot Tajima. on the Coast of the Japan Soa. It i.s reported that two hundred houses have collapsed in the town o. Toyooka. where tires were started in many of the houses. Severe damage is also reported !:. other towns in the same province. TOKIO, May 23. A horrifying earthquake is reported from Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, where many big buildings were ( racked and damaged, and smaller buildings were brought down. Telegraphic communication i- interrupted. The i ell Ire of the quake is between Kyoto and Toyooka. Many structures in the latter place, including the railway station and the telegraphic ollice were destroyed. Loss of life is reported, hut the details are lacking. This is the greatest quake in this region for thirty years. TOKIO. May 23. The worst danger i.s over at Osaka. Kyoto and Xagoya. "here lires billowed the earthquake. Wild confusion prevailed in the streets, as the people were afraid to reenter the buildings. The greatest damage done is at the seaport of Toyooka, where lires are now raging, and the town is considered doomed. The population of ten thousand are fleeing into the country. A hot spring resort at Kino-saki was wiped out, by lire, in which a number of residents were fatally trapped. A train due at Toyooka is missing. It is feared it is entombed in the Ashiva tunnel, which collapsed. Two other trains were derailed. Military aeroplanes were despatched from ()sftka to invosti^sito. Eighty dead are reported in the small towns of Kuniyama and Fukuclij, indicating that it is possible that there is a much heavier death roll in the larger centres. Numbers of smaller quakes have occurred since the first shocks, and those have increased the terror of the people.
