CANTERBURY PROGRESS LEAGUE.
AN NT AD REPORT. (To he read at Annual Meeting). 'The Extentive has pleasure in presenting its fifth annual report, together with 'Statement of Accounts for Iho year ended 31st. March, 1825. Regular monthly meetings havo been held, and mouthers have discussed and given due attention to the various matters brought before them for consideration, and while the various discussions havo heel) tally reported in the Press, a brief review of the more important matters is given here. FINANCE. The accompanying Statement of Accounts shows ti balance of cash in hand amounting to £l-1 12s (id, but except for Publicity purposes funds have been very slow in coming in. and tho Committee has Ix'en hampered in its activities on that account. RAILWAY SERVICE. Railway mailers have occupied the attention of the members considerably, and on two occasions, first at a conference with the District Traffic Manager, ami later with the Railway Commissioners, questions of local interest and general policy were discussed. one special result Icing tho acceleration of the express service on Saturdays, and it. is pleasing to note that the department is recognising the need for catering for the public requirements by speeding up the scrgenera 1 interest. PFBLICTTY. During the year, mainly through the efforts of Dr Teiebelmnnn, the sum o| £139 Inis been collected lolally, ami a grant of £IOO obtained from the Tourist Department to as- ’ si-t to defray tho cost of an excellent public:)! ion - both from an artistic and publicity point of view - entitled “A Holiday in Westland.” the issue of which was undertaken by the Canterbury Progress League, to whom the sum of £240 has boon forwarded. The success of the pamphlet from a publicity point of view depends on its wide-spread issue, and further contributions will bo welcomed to that end. GENERAL. The Committee Has identified itself with various matters of local and general importance, among which may fe mentioned the question of Timber Royalties to Local Bodies, Conference of South Island Leagues. Duplication of Lyttelton. Tunnel. Top-house Route to Blenheim. South Westland Harbour and Reading Schemes and Closer Settlement generally. Travelling Schools for Farmers, and has supported all matters which are not in conflict with genera interest.
In conclusion, the Committee desires to record its thanks to the parent body in Christchurch for sustained interest in We-Fland. to Mr Goss who has acted as representative on the ( ‘oiinril. to Mr Climie who represented the Committee at the Conference of South Island Leagues held in Invercargill. 1o the various local bod ii l -; and individuals for donat ions and subscriptions. to the County Cuii:c il tor the u.st' ol the Council
