MAN LOSES FOOT.
AITS HA I’ OX OXFORD LINE. CHRISTCHURCH. .May 17. Through a collision between a, motorear and the Rangiorn-O-xford train on the Fern.sidc Road last- evening, a man named William Suelford. labourer, married. residing at Avert- Street. Rangier;!, lost Iris left foot. He is an employee of Mr R. Dalzie], threshing machine proprietor, who was giving Idm a lift home from his work. There was a dense fog at the time, and when about a quarter of a mile on the Rangiora side of the Fe nisi do Railway station, where the road runs* alongside the railway line, Mr Dtdziel. observing a light approaching, which he took to he a ear or motor-cycle on its wrong side of the road, pulled over to his proper side, when too late, found it was the train.
The engine struck the ear a glancing blow, -mashing the radiator, tearing off a front wheel, the inunguartl and running board. The ear did not overturn. and Mr Dalzicl escaped without injury. Sliefford. however, who was holding his bicycle oil the running-board. was thrown out, and one of the train wheels passed over Ids left leg above tin- ankle, almost severing it. Mr ('. \V. Tyler, happened to be passing in his ear. and he took the injured man to the Broeklelmr.st- Private ilospifal at Rangiora, where Die Will and King amputated the leg close io 1 lie knee.
