HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING. WEDNESDAY. .MAY 10th. The Council held a special meeting at 7..'10 p.in. to meet representatives of the Health Board. There were present: Tho Mayor (Mr 0. .A. lVrr.v), Messrs J. King, G. 11. Blank. F. Orr. G. Heinz, W. .Jeffries and 11. T. Parry. Apologies were made for Messrs Evans and Coulson. The members of the Health Board (Mr McKean and Drs McKibbin and Telford) were present to confer with the Council. Mr Perry welcomed the visitors who were present to discuss matters in connection with the drainage ol the town, lie was glad to welcome the visitors and would be pleased to discuss matters with them.
Mr McLean addressed the Council at length on the subject of the removal of refuse. Ho said tho members of tlio Board were I bore to have a friendly talk with members. He understood the Council bad bad this under discussion lor the past two
years and lhey were now here to get if possible, a definite decision of the Council’s proposals. He then proceeded to refer at length to the wishes of the Health Board particulnrly dealing with bouse refuse, and drainage proposals. I)r Mt'Kibbcu said the Board ol Health were out to have a system of refuse removal put into operation in every borough with a population ol over 500. The cost involved would not a heavy one, a matter ol 2d or 3d per household weekly. Dr Telford said he had discussed the quest ion with the Council on a number of occasions and Ibex- xveie there now to find out what progress had been made in their proposals, lie bad to say that in the sister towns of Greynioiiili and WcsipoH more progress bad lieen made.
Mr .TcllTi-s said lie doubted Dial the Council would be able L> give the lead that night, that their visitors had asked for. The whole subject was a question of finance and that governed the Council in their movements. t hough they recognised the need of improvements. The Mayor staled at length Die position of the Council pointing out that the statements made by the members would clear Die air. He pointed on I that flic members of the Council were all imbued with tho idea of making the town as sanitary and tolerable as possible, and gave an outline of bow the suggested works afleeted the finances of tho Council, this being the crucial pari of tho whole. The plans and proposals of the past Council were referred to at considerable length. \ general discussion followed m which the visitors referred again and ao.'tin to. their desire to have a system of removal of house refuse installed m the town. Ultimately it was resolved on the motion of Messrs .Jeffries and Bhmk |n defer consideration by Die. Council to the next ordinary meeting after which the Health. Board would be advised of Die proposed action.
