THIRD GRADE. Excelsiors o—School 0. KIWIS V. STARS. The Star-Kiwi game which took place on Victoria Lark at Greymouth on Saturday was a well-contested game, tingame being much more even than the scores indicate. First, blood was drawn by 11. Steel who kicked a penalty goal lor Kiwis. Then Reynolds scored tor Stars. J. O’Connor scored the only try of the Kiwis’ score, w hile . Steel, scored two tries for Stars, the last try coming for the ambers when Sherlock gi t over just 'before the call ot time, the. game ending Stars 12, Kiwis f>.
An incident of note in the game was when from about halt-wax'. .Jack Steel swooped down on the leather, and made a dashing run to the line, 1 itoraliv flitting down all opposition. A score seemed inevitable w hen his brother 11. Steel, ill-lied across the field, downing the giant right on the line.
The junior compelii ions were continued on Saturday in beauiilul weal her, lx it It grounds on Cass Square being in first class order, especially Xn 1 ground which was at its best. Roth junior games on Saturday were interesting from an onlooker’s point ot view. Surprise was expressed at Ro-s defeating Arahura at Arahura by 17 h> (l. hut ii is understood that Arahura will have a .stronger combination in future. Kanieri, who travelled to Knmara defeated the home team by six to nil. while the Saturday before at Hokitika they defeated Ro-s. EXCELSIORS v. KOKATA IT I. The Excelsior versus Kokatahi junior game was staged oil Cass Square on No I playing liehl at 1.30 p.m. and il was a fairly fast and even game from start to finish. For the first live minutes Kokatahi set the pace and tin'll tlie red and blacks carried play down the lield when a line forward rush by Montagu. Preston and Stevenson culminated in Stevenson following tlie ball over very lasi, thus registering the home team’s lust try. hut Aitkeu’s shot at goal missed. Excelsiors ,'L Kokatahi 0. Immediately after Montagu broke uwav nicely with the ball at bis teet and put in some kicks, and billowing up verv fast, overwhelmed the black full-back who j list, kicked out iu the nick of time. MVDuiiald picked up verv nicely and let out. all the red and black hacks handling, until Dale kicked out. From the line out a scrum resulted, the Excelsiors again getting
going, the hall being handled well until it. reached Dale, who mis-ed. the hall going out. Kokatahi carried play tip tlie field, OT.rien con t ribut ing with a. good kick and fast following up. The Excelsior forwards were now getting iu -mile splendid work, some oj their rushes being irresistible. missel. Tim next thrilling incident was when Preston intercepted in his own 2d. and going through the blacks like wildlife scored in the corner, with Stevenson. Thompson anil Harris in dose attendance. li was one ol Ihe spectacular incidents ot the day and was well worthy of acclaim. Stevenson's kick missed. Excelsiors IS Kokutahi .’I. Kokatahi were now putting more ginger into their work, but the handling of the back combination was very faulty, and their Hashes were to m> avail against the better form and combination of the reds. A very preUv piece of nitty took place when the Excelsiors resumed the nflensive again, this time the hall earning from the scrum and being' handled by neark all the hacks, went through the reverse, and then a medley ol passing commenced between the lorwards and backs, but the Kokatahi defence was 100 -t l ong to allow them to get through. There were no lurther incidents of note, only that Fleming missed another shot at goal from a penally. a. most enjoyable game ending Excelsior.- IS, kokatahi •’• .Mr W. KIWIS v. HAPIIIABT. The Kiwi-llarihari game was played on No 1 playing field at 3 o'clock and it was a hard and determined struggle throughout, but the anther tic blacks were too fast and too heavy for the blues. The game was of a fast nature ami the blues made an impression for a while, but they had a tough proposition, but- nevertheless put a very valiaTu fight. E. Hohinson missed an easy kick from a penalty a few minutes after the commencement. The Kiwis were prssiug Harihari when Whitt' kicked away from the ruck and following up kicked again. A. Stopforth capping a very nice piece of work, which seemed to augur well for the blues. D. Breeze s kick failed. Kiwis 3. Harihari 0. Honours in play remained even tor j some time until Person broke away and went through and scored in the corner. F. Robinson's: kick failed. Harihari 3, Kiwis 3. por the remainder of the spell play
