A SPECIAL EFFORT
TO RAISE FINDS. Those associated with the provision of a. Soldiers’ flail, which will serve the purpose of providing .suitable quarters for both social and club purposes for the returned men, in accordance with the promise made in times past, hope to finalise their work this month. A special effort is being made to raise £l5O this month to pay off the debt on 11 io building, as it now stands, greatly improved and suitable as quarters. I><it still short of the original pilau in that it lacks a completed front and main club-rooms.* However, as far as the blinding lias prove- led. it provides a hall and club room which are in a very convenient form, end apart from the s\x*eial use intend d in connection will- the- local branch ot the Returned Soldiers’ Association are certainly a great acquisition to the town, filling a long felt want.
The organising committee in setting about the raising of iln' balance c ! the funds required, has as readers v. 11 sec by the inset to-day. provided a round of events for tho month which should result in the money required being raised. On next Wednesday night the week I v euchre cssenibly is to he held, and the following evening will he the Sports’ Benefit Ball. Next Saturday will be depot clay, and as the country people are helping. the funds should ho augmented considerably. On Thursday 21st. there will he the vveckK- euchre, which will he the final for the chillier set tournament. Saturday Mav 23rd. will be Empire Even and a juvenile fancy dress ball is !■> be be.cl from 7.31) to 13 p.m. followed by an adult dance from ten to midnight, (special prizes will !«' awarded. the juveniles for the best costumes in national dress and otherwise. particulars for which are detailed on cbe inset herewith. On the last Thursday in (lie month there is to he a special day. in the afternoon there will be a cookery competition and fancy work displays. together with a baby show. Ibis should lie a most interesting event and he popular especially with the ladies. Again, details of the cooking classes and particulars ill relation t< Die babv show will be found in the in-v.-t. On Saturday. May 30th. will be ilie last depot day of the season, winding up with a dutch auction in Ricci! St. at 8.30 p.m. Altogether it will be seen that a varied and sustained effort is to be made in a worthy cause for the good „!* the soldiers and the benefit ol the town, and no doubt the public will n.‘ usual respond liberally by both patronago ami donations.
