N.Z. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
(Westland Branch.) The annual general meeting of the Westland branch of the X.Z. Educational Institute took place in Hokitika District High School on Saturday, .May 2nd. at 10 .30 a.in. A fairly representative gathering was present, itwenty-two teachers in all assembling. The annual report showed a very active year for this Branch, the membership of which had been throughout, the year as high a.s forty-live, while the balance showed a satisfactory sum to its credit. Much discussion at the meeting centred round the two salary schemes which the Department had placed before the Institute for consideration. That scheme :-o designed to lengthen the duration of an appointment was given general support, it being deemed that the disorganisation resulting from teachers fri’iquently changing their pi; itioiis meant an appreciable less in the work of the schools concerned. The Branch had the misfortune this year of losing the services of two useful members, Mr T. (■’. .McCullough who had acted as president and delegate and Mr T. Irvine, now in Wellington, who had occupied the offices of pn Indent, vice-president ami delegate to the animal conference at Wellington.
The correspondence having been read. it. was agreed to support ' the following remits from the Urey Branch :
(1) That all teachers who have left. t!ie service ami returned be allowed to forward back payments towards the Kuperaumiation Fund together with compound interest on those payments.
(2) That the N. Z.E.L urge the necessity of the recognition of back service to those teachers who have broken servile and that all members of Parliament be circularised asking them to use their best endeavours lo seeure this privilege as well as the removal of anomalies existing in the Superannuation Act. The Central Executive wrote iiulieating the policy which it deemd wise to adopt under the circumstances ol the schools having been closed for so bmg ti period. The opinion was expressed that it was the teachers who must be relied upon to do wlmt is necessary to meet the emergency and that their efforts in that (lircctjen "ill not be enhanced but rather hindered by the issue of defalk'd instructions. The following olliier.s were elected |. 11- the ensuing year: - President. Mr 'Nival; riio-pn-sident. Alisa AI. Wilson: secretary and treasurer. Ml- w. D. Berk. Managing Committee: Mrs Dale and Alls Munson. Misses Ward. Bruce, and Nightingale, a.ud Alosm-s Partridge and Maloney. A very interesting lecture "lit it bo ’’Aims and MctlioiTs in lea fling was delivered by Mr S. Irwin. Inspector 111 Schools. At the invitation of the Branch the Stall’ ol the Hokitika Convent attended and on the motion of the president, the (speaker was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks.
