Some time after the opening of the poll this morning, consternation was caused among the officials at the main Polling Booth at the Town Hall by the discovery that the ballot papers for the election of the City members of the Harbour Board contained a wrong direction- These ballot papers were headed; “City of Auckland—Election of three members of the Auckland Harbour Board."’

Then followed the names of nine candidates, tlio voter being directed to place a cross against the names of the candidates lor whom he desired to vote.

The number of members to ho returned for the city is four, and not three. The mistake was not discovered till an elector drew attention to it at about 9.30, or half an hour after the poll opened. By that time, t"0 or three hundred electors had recorded their votes. After the discovery was made, the polling clerks were set to work marking out the word ‘-three” and substituting “four” in pencil. Bv that time, however, it seemed probable that many of the electors’ had olieyed the erroneous instruction on their papers, and had voted for three candidatees. How many did so vote, will be discovered after the papers are scrutinised to-night.

It is considered inevitable that 1 result of this mistake will bo a costlyone, necessitating another election. The statement is made that it is certain that one of the defeated candidates will have the election upset.
