HOKITIKA BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

The Committee- of tho above met at the Town Hall last night at 7.-10 o’clock. Present: Air D. J. Evans (vicc-President), Airs Pilkington, Messrs S. J. Preston, A. G. Pilkington and J. Niven (lion. seen.) Apology was made for the absence of Alesdatncs Parkhil! and Benjamin.

After the transaction of the formal business, the Chairman moved that a letter of sympathy he forwarded to Airs Bennett in her present illness, and best wishes be expressed for her early recovery. it was stated that tlie information that day regarding the lady’s condition was very encouraging. Air Preston seconded. Carried. The Secretary reported that during llie past month, no new work had been undertaken, but routine work Intel been attended to with the result that Afacandrew and Cass Squares wore looking very well. The condition of the grounds was giving the greatest- satisfaction to the public. On the next evening a benefit ball in aid of the I’untbt of the Society was to lie held, and it promised to ho very successful. A special committee was managing the I’mietion. The report was received. The Chairman reported in regard to Hie works on Cass Square, remarking that the far-sealing of the pathway would lio a great saving; ns »• wns costing about £2O a year to chip* the grass off the track. The work of tar-scaling should he taken in hand as soon a.s the circumstances permitted. Air Pilkington mentioned that the sporting bodies contemplated holding an art union to raise Hinds lor further improving Cass Square, and if the Society joined with the movement the work of tar-sealing the track could he incorporated with the proposals. The meeting agreed that the suggestion was worth considering, and it "as resolved to reopen Hu* matter at the next meeting when the President nould he present. The Chairman mentioned that Air G. \. AYood, who had been Chairman <>i the Reserves Committee on the Borough Council for some time, had now retired from the local body. Air AYood had co-operated with the Society in the work of beautifying, and had done valuable service. Tt was resolved to accord Afr AYood a vole of thanks and appreciation for what lie had done, and regret he had retired from the local body. Tho Secretary reported in regard to finance, and it. was resolved to defer further action in reference to raising finds ;ill the following meeting when the question of holding a gala day would ho revived.
