BT TELEGRAm—PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. 1 | AN INQUEST. | PALMERSTON N., April 27. • At the inquest regarding the death of Thomas Medley, a telegraph linesman at Rangiwahia, who died in the hospital on April 2t)th., following admission for the treatment of a bullet wound received on Good Friday while shooting with others at Rangiwahia, John McLean, a blacksmith, of Rangikahia, -stated that on April 10th. lie had lieen rabbit shooting with deceased and one other. Witness had a AV’inehester repeating rifle. After shooting over the country they shot at a target. Witness proceeded to unload the rifle and when lie thought it was empty lie closed the breach, hut the rifle went off unexpectedly. Deceased apparently walked over in front of the muzzle. Me was standing on a rise above witness, when ho received the shot which was accidentally discharged. Witness must have pulled the trigger, thinking the rifle unloaded. After the rifle exploded flic deceased said he was hit. Soon after the deceased was carried to the hotel on a litter of branches and medically attended to. He was sent to the hospital. James McKee, postmaster at Rangiwahia, corroborated. The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased died of septicaemia, this being the result of n. bullet wound, accidentally inflicted by John McLean, near Rangiwahia. RIFLE SHOOTING. HOSPITAL RADIUM ARRIVES. A COSTLY ITEM. WELLINGTON, April 23. The radium for- cancer research by the Wellington Public Hospital obtained bv public subscription subsidised by the New Zealand Government, arrived at the hospital yesterday, and was opened and there checked prior to the meeting. Its cost was CPJ.OoJ. less exchange amounting to £135 11s oil., or £11.917 8s 7d. The Customs primage amounted to £132 lls 7d. There were seven packages, each containing within many wrappings a little flat morocco case. Those when opened, disclosed small round brass containers, resembling apothecaries’ weights or gold studs, within which lay portions of the 750.29 milligrammes of the precious substance. There were also with I h.o radium eye shades of brass, resembling small anglers’ spoons. The radium arrived in perlect order. The chairman said that the parcels had been opened before a member of the Customs at the hospital, as it was inadvisable to open them at the post olflce. The necessary certificates of quality were enclosed.
