DR JULIUS
A PUBLIC FAEEAVELL. [BY TELKGRArIT —rEII PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 23. Nix thousand people attended tonight’s public farewell to Archbishop Julius in King Edward Barracks, Dean ('arriiigton presiding. The Mayor, Mr Fleslier. said that Dr Julius was almost an institution in Christchurch, and the deep interest he had taken in the city’s welfare for 35 years made citizens feel a personal loss. Bishop Brodie was to speak at the farewell, but the dentil of Rev. Father Riordnn at Ross called, him away. Dr Brodie wired an apology for his absence and he congratulated Dr Julius on his long episcopal life. He wished him many years to encourage, with sympathetic interest, the ecclesiastical, charitable and civic activities with which in his long life be bad been so happily associated. Archdeacon Haggit spoke for the clergy. Rev. Air Patcliett for other churches, and Airs Roberts for the women of the diocese. Air 11. D. Andrews (Diocesan Chancellor) presented a wallet of notes on behalf of the laity. The Arehliishop replied in a reminiscent vein, lie said he was a New Zealander, though horn in London, and he felt that if New Zealand ever forgot God, it would not be worth preserving. lie appealed to parents to protect their children against the evils of the day. Archbishop Julius performed his last otlicial act to-day, when he opened the memorial (lining hall at Christ’s College, erected by the Old Boys’ Association, to the memory of those masters and old boys of the College who made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War. In accepting the deed of gift, His Grace traced the history of the College in which he had been associated for 35 years, and lie expressed the hope that the boys would do nothing (hat would bring discredit on the College that they would maintain its honour and dignity, and keep before them the ideals of perseverance, faithfulness and usefulness, and would pass on the benefits that they had received.
