[by TELEGRAPH-—PEB FBES9 ASSOCIATION. LOST TIME OF SCHOOLS. 1 XSTTTUTE’S R ECOMMEN DATIONS WELLINGTON, April 25. Ihe Executive of the Educational Institute iu response to an invitation font the Education Department has submitted an opinion on the question of making up lost time. It considers that it is not advisable to lengthen the school day by an order covering all classes. It would he better to leave it to the teachers to meet the special circumstances in their own way and some have already taken measures to that effect. If. however, experience shows some lengthening is advisable, the Institute favours waiting till after August, on account of lighting and heating. Holding school on Saturdays is not recommended on account of the inconvenience to parents and interference with games. One suggestion is to reduce the arithmetic syllabus from five hours to three, which would enable most losses to he made good. The proficiency examinations will not lie prejudiced as the tendency is to accent the headmaster’s reeommendat ions. The institute, on the whole. considers the teachers must he relied on to d-> what is necessary to meet the situation and they had belter not he hampered hy detailed ins i met ions. SHIPWRECK FEARED.
