WEST COAST .MATTERS

CHRisTCHERCH, April 17

At tile meeting of the Canterbury Education Hoard to-day the lonoaiug West Coast appointments were recommended :

Mi-s M. E. Phelan, assistant teachr at Gicymoiith.

M iss 1). M. Lynn. so< ondary assistant at Hokitika. Miss 11. Domiellaii. Assistant Mistress at Runanga. Miss I). M. Glassou, Sole Teacher at Moonlight.

A report was received from the judges with regard to the Shield Cumjctition carried out on the West Coast during the year 11)2 l-zo. The awards are as follows; Ngahere School. Ist. 430 joints; Cobden 2nd. 372 points; Russ, 3rd., 360 points; Paroa, 4th., 358 points.

It was recommended that the usual money prizes lie allotted to be spent ou agricultural requisites, and that . congratulatory letter be sent to ea. of i.ie successful .schools. A letter was received from the Hokitika Committee urging that instruction in swimming should he given more prominence in the syllabus, and that teachers should be required to take a more active part in sports. It was revolved to reply that it was already part of the teachers’ duty to take an active interest in the

games cf the pupils, but that the Board, while in sympathy with the Committee’s proposal, could not agree to the suggestion tlut swimming should lie made a compulsory subject, thcie being various difficulties that would prevent this being put into effect.

W<T>dsV>ck Comniititce’s 'application for the following requirements at the school was referred to the Foreman for a report:—(l) supply of sand for the floor of the shelter shed in place of hoards, (2) the election of strong fences r.t the rear of the .school to prevent wandering stock from gaining access, (3) attention to the front gates, and (4) repairs to portion of the main building.
