Nominations for various positions on local bodies bound up with municipal government, take place on Wednesday next It is understood the Mayor (Mr (1. A Perry) will have “a walk-over” for the chief position of the town, though it is probable it will he Mr Perry’s final term as he contemplates retiring from local body work after the next term. It is mentioned that three of the sitting councillors are likely to retire and not seek re-elec-tion, hut several fresh names are mentioned, including business people in Revell Street. For the Hospital Board and Harbor Board seats, the sitting members are likely to be re-elected unopposed. Where contests are necessary, the polling will ho held on the 29th. inst.

It is hoped the additions to the Soldiers’ Hall will he far enough advanced by Thursday next to permit of the opening of the new entrance to the hall that evening. If this can lx 1 arranged a special euchre ..evening will be organised. and a special feature will he made of the dance to follow. The proceeds will he devoted to the It.S.A. building fund.

Advico received in town this morning from Boss stated the condition of Bov Father Biordan was most serious. He had a very restless night, and a serious turn this morning about eight o’clock. His present condition is causing extreme anxiety. The lit. Bev. Bishop Brodie, accompanied hv a sister of the patient came through from Christchurch yesterday, motoring through from Otira to Boss.
The death took place, yesterday afternoon of Mrs John Graham, licensee of the ° Longford Hotel, Kokatahi. Ihe deceased had been in ill health foi a considerable time past. Deceased was a native of Manchester. England and 61 years of age. Her husband pre-deceas-ed her some years ago. She was a v.ellknown figure in the district and "as generally esteemed. A famih of three ate left, one daughter (Mrs Webster of Kokatahi) and two sons (William and Stanley). Very general regretwill he felt at the passing of the dcC'OSISCII.
A visit of inspection was paid on Thursday afternoon to the Dunedin Exhibition buildings l>v Mr \\ . Machin. president, of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, in company with Mr ,T. Sutherland Boss and the secretary (Mr Spence). Speaking to a reporter Mr ..lachin expressed his surprise at the advanced stage, tile preparations had reached, especially the provision for the secondary industries, which. he thought, would he a very impressive exhibit, lie could see that adequate preparations had been made for amusements, a very important side of an. exhibition. The site itself was charming, with the hills and the bush behind.
