It is understood that the steamer Kaikoura has hcen sold to an Italian Shipping Coy. She will he handed to the new owners at Genoa on the homeward voyage. ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS. BRISBANE, April 15. Mr Theodore, speaking at Townsville, said : •• There can he nothing wrong in Italians coming to the country. Queensland is sorely in need of population. particularly immigrants for the land where Italians were willing to go. I he trouble was that they congregated in one or two districts, thus flooding the local market. The remedy lay in spreading them over a large area. This morning it was found that there were eight members of the crew absent, and there was no response to a call at the shipping master's office for men to lill the vacancies. Each day it is found that different members of the crew were absent and, although they have been in the vicinity of the wharf, they have declined to go aboard, and they will give no reason for their action. HORSEWOMAN INJURED. SYDNEY. April 15. The Show concluded in dull, cold weather. During an equestrienne event, over hurdles, Miss Vera Me Indian's mount shied at the hurdles, throwing Miss .McMillan to the ground with terrific force. She was taken to the hospital, -suffering from a badly fractured collarbone and probably other injuries. BLACK MURDERS POLICEMAN DARWIN. April 15. A report has been received from Caledon Bay that Constable Bridgeman who has hcen engaged there keeping the natives in order and completing the search for the supposed missing women from the steamer Douglas Mawson had been murdered by his black tracker. N.Z. WANTED ARRESTED. SYDNEY, April 16. Following the arrest of two men in the streets it was discovered that one of the men was wanted iu New Zealand on charges of stealing £73 in connection with a. horse sale.
THE VOLU-MXIA TROUBLE. SYDNEY, April 11. Captain Thomas, master of the steamer Yolumnia, on a further charge of leaving members of the crew at Fremantle, was discharged. Last month an information against Captain Thomas was discharged on the ground Hint the infoi-malioii coutaiiied in the warrant issued at Berth was defective. The captain was charged with leaving members of the crew at Fremantle when the voyage for which they had signed on was not completed. ARRESTED FOR MURDER. ADELAIDE, April 16. The police have arrested Bennctos. He had in his possession a number of cheques and papers inscribed with the name of Vlachos. [Bennetos was susweeted of the murder of another Greek, Vlachos, the murder being rather brutal. Vlachos’ throat was cut and his heart removed.] SHOW ATTENDANCE.
