The Kumara race meeting passed off very successfully yesterday. The local exodus by motor car, despite the fact tluit convenient trains were running, was remarkable, livery available car was snapped up by ten o’clock for the Kumara trip, while the aggregation of cars at the Kumara racecourse must have been easily a record. Ihe Club had a very good day, both in regard to attendance and with the totalisator.
The need for the continuous telephone proved to he greatly required over the Faster holidays. There l were very curtailed hours on Friday, Sunday and Monday, with the result that with the many visitors moving about, many people were greatly inconvenienced. As the telegraph hours wore curtailed, also, very drastically, the inconvenience was greatly intensified. Had the telephone been open, many long distance calls could have lx?on recorded which would have reduced the inconvenience regarding telegraph facilities.
The police raided a billiard saloon in Albert St., tlrcyinoulh on .Saturday morning. When the police arrived, A. F. ('hum), the marker, was the only occupant of the rooms. The death took place yesterday ol .Mrs Taminelli, a well-known resident of Kanieri and Hokitika for many years after a long illness. The deceased was a very old resident of Hokitika, and 01 years of age. She was a daughter of the late .Mr Rodgers, formerly connected with the Harbour Board as signalman. She was married twice, losing Per first husband in a. mining fatality at Rimu. Then later for a long period of years she resided at Kanieri, where she was a well-known and very popular fifnre, identifying herself with the public functions ol the. district. Deceased leaves one son (Mr 'William Owens of Tvokntahi road) and three daughters (Mrs L. Dwnn and Mrs D. Graham of Hokitika, and Mrs E. Morris, of Kanieri;.
