WELLINGTON NEWS

TRADE FOR TWO MONTHS. (Special to “Guardirji”.) WJif.rJNOTON, April 0. It is worth while now and again to take tlie trade figures as supplied hy the Government Statistician in his monthly abstract and examine, analyse and compare them, for such a proceeding generally provides some instruction. The export and import returns for January and February are now available, and the value of exports for those two months aggregate £1.5,032,922 as compared with £13,720,828 in the corresponding two months of 1924, an increase of £1,80.3,404, or not quite 10 per eent. This increase was largely due to wool shipments. For the two months under review the wool export totalled 201,010 hales, and the value was assessed at £7.004,70.3 against 220.10.3 hales valued at £.3.0.32.290, the increase in value being 38 per cent., while the quantity shows a decrease of 18,873-3 bales, or about 9 per cent. Tims the value per hale of the wool shipped in January and February last is placed at C3S 1.1 9d as compared with only £-9 per bale for the shipments in the cor-re-panding two mouths of 1921. Ibis assessment of £93 per lade seems ridiculously high, even though the prices in Iha-ember ami January last were high.

A more accurate valuation would probably he £3O. The quantity of butter and cheese shipped during the two months amounted to (i 13.1.59 cu t. against 85-5,732 ewt. in the corresponding term of last year. There was a

ter exported, but a heavy decline in cheese, and there is naturally ;t very sharp decline in she aggregate value, the totals being £1.102.923. as against £.5.359.(i.52. a decrease of £1,250.729. The frozen meat market has been rather steady, it was lirm in January and February, and two months prior to that, and the returns for frozen meat exported in the two months was £2.183.052 as compared with £2,149,989, an increase of £333.663. The imports exclusive of specie amounted to .£8,840.29 t as compared with £8.179,43-1 for the two months of 1924. thus showing that the volume of imports is being maintained. The number of motor vehicles imported in the two months was 32,5 against 3079 in January and February of last year, a defease 'of 401. but th,\ smaller number imported this year cost more, for according to the returns the value was £7l 1.665 against £608,720, an increase of £182.715. Slated in another wav the ear.-, impelled were of an average value of £217. while those imported in the two months of lasL year the average was £165 per ear. Evidently a belter and more expensive type of car is being imported, or it may he that the ratio of commercial vehicles is greater than was idle ease last year. Taking motor vehicles, motor bicycles, tires, material and accessories and henzinc. the value of these imported in the first two months ot the year v.nx £1.358,133. as compared with £1,920,960 in the corresponding two months of last year.
