WELLINGTON, April 7. The Government meteorological ofiiecr's report for the month of March is as follows: “March is the first month of autumn in New Zealand, and the weather this year was in striking contrast to that experienced in While last .March was one of the wettest months ever experienced, especially in the East Coast district:;, this year, it has boon one of the driest months of March on record. The weather, on ti e whole, wa: dry and sunny, warm by day and com by night. Changeable weather was experienced. with squally and showery conditions in the first fortnight, especially on the West Coast and southern districts. Anti-cyclonic conditions ruled from March 14th. to March 2-31 h.. and, during this time, there was very little wind. The hitter unit of tin month was somewhat- unsettled and there were sharp frosts, which cut down tender vegetation about March 29th. and THh. There was also a light frost on March 10th. in many parts, and fresh snow was visible on the mountains. These frosts were considered early for this season, and seven won' recorded in Christchurch, ranging from cue to five points. “The rainfall was above the average in the high country of the South Island and in Westland and Otago, and slightly so at New Plymouth, but everywhere else it appears to have been considerable below the average.
