The whole of the new issue of capital by the Bank of New Zealand has been taken up, and came into operation the other day. By arrangement with the Prime Minister lasi September the amount of this issue was C1.123,(MX) in £1 shares. The great bulk was taken up by existing shareholders, and these shares are now dividend-earning. The Government took lip £375,000 of the issue as preference shares, and the other £750,000 was offered to existing shareholders in a proportion of one new to four existing ordinary shares. The avowed aim of the Government in authorising the new issue was to strengthen the finances of the State Advances Office in its work of providing for farmers, who, up till now, had the protection of the Mortgages Extension Act.
