I nlnrinat ion ha> been received ill Hokitika that at about 8 o’clock oil Friday night last a lire occurred in a private car shed owned by Mr A. It. Clarke, of Mauriceville, when a light motor-lolly was totally destroyed, and a heavy lurry, parked beside the shed, was damaged. A quantity ot lubricants and tools in the shed were also destroyed. The two trucks and the she were covered with 9800 insurance, hut it is estimated that the loss exceeds that amount by 9900. Mr Clarke who is the mail contractor and a carrier at Mauriceville is a brother-in-law of Mr C. J. Nightingale of the Hokitika “Guardian” Proprietary.

Further particulars of the fatality in the railway workshop., at Greyniouth, yesterday show the deceased. Bay mend R. Brickell was a relieving fireman and part of his duty was to oil the belt pulleys, and to replaie belts when they came off the pulleys. Yesterday morning. at about twelve o’clock, he went up to a planjcing near the roof to replace a belt. He was sitting on the plank, leaving his legs dangling loosc k - Iv. The practice when work of this description is being performed i.s t stop the engine. A fellow-worker James Keith, went to tell the driver to stop the engine. On hi.s way he happened to look around and discovered that the belting had come off the hottom pulley and become clear of the shaft. This caused the licit to coil at the. top, and the unfortunate young man’s legs were caught in the toil. He was whirled lound several times, and was then literally thrown into space, hitting the floor of the workshop with a thud. The plank that deceived had been sitting on was smashed. The unfortunate man sustained terrible injuries. .-\n arm and leg were broken, the base of the skull was fractured, and there were also injuries to other parts of the body, including a deep cut in the forehead.
