WELLINGTON. April 4. Cabinet approved this morning of the o|H'iiing of sonic of the •schools in the North Island as from Wednesday, April 15th. in those districts where the epidemic of infantile paralysis appears to have run its course, hut nearly all the schools in the Mouth Island are to remain closed. All attendances at school are to lie voluntary. To some extent the restrictions placed on travelling a.ml the congregation of children are to he relaxed as from the same date. Cabinet's decision was as follows: <1) Schools to be reopened as limited and recommended by the Health .Department, a formal report from the Health Department to be prepared and sent immediately to the Education Department, then the opening as so limited to he notified.

/_>) Attendance not to he compulsory until otherwise notified. This applies to secondary as well as to primary schools.

(.'!) The position as to other school will lie considered later. PARTIAL RELIEF.

In the North Auckland Health district, comprising roughly, all the area north of Auckland City, secondary schools only arc to reopen. In the Central Auckland Health district, which embraces an area a little more than the Auckland metropolitan area, all schools will he permitted to open, hut in South Auckland district, which extends south of Taumarunui. the present restrictions are to be continued until further notice. Secondary schools only arc to open in the Coromantlel-Opotiki Health District. In the WairarapaEast Cape Health district all schools are to remain closed with the exception of those in the Waipawa and AVairarapa Hosoital districts, and in the Taraiiaki-Horowhemin Health district secondary schools only will be relieved of the present restrictions.

All schools arc to be reopened in the Greater Wellington and Alakura Coun-

ty areas. All the schools in the Mouth Island are to remain closed, with the execution of secondary schools in the Nel-son-Alarlborough Health district. CONGREGATION OF CHILDREN. It has also been decided that the mandate forbidding children to travel between the North and South Islands shall be lifted. It. will be noted that the only areas in which all schools arc to be allowed 1 to open are Central Auckland and Central Wellington. Ttt these two areas the mandate appying to the admission of children to picture theatres and other places of amusement and to the congregation of children generally will be removed. The fact that all attendance at schools is to he purely voluntary is specially emphasised hv the Health authorities. The Health Department received only eight notifications of cases of inafntilo paralysis for the whole Dominion for the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. to-day. There were no fresh cases in Wellington city or suburbs, and none in the Canterbury or Otago districts.
