Tiie football season was opened on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon when a good crowd assembled to witness tiie two local teams, Kiwis and Excelsiors try conclusions with tho Stars and Uuitcds of Greynioutli. The presence of lie All Black. Steel, caused more than usual interest and lii.s play was closely watched. The United Excelsior match resulted in a win for Excelsiors by 13 to 10 while- the Star-Kiwi game resulted in a win for Stars by 8 to 3. two tries being scored by Steel. With tho season yet in its infancy players are- not in form, hut there was some very promising form shown in patches, the play on the whole proving interesting. Messrs Sumner and Cut hush were tho referees.
