The party of members of the Borough Council who visited the water supply works yesterday, included the .Mayor (Mr Perry). Crs King. Heinz. Lloyd, Wood' and Evans, and Mr Antlrewes, Town Clerk. The first stop was at the Kanieri forks, where the supplementary service supply ol water is to he taken from the oveiilow of the Lake Kanieri water rate near the pen stock, and conducted by a line ol steel pipes to the main line following the road below. The connection is well advanced, hut it is over a rough terrace fate, and progress is slow necessarily. It will he next week at least before the connect inn can be made, and advantage derited from the service. The pipes are about 3011. long, and ej considerable weight, and take considerable handling. The surface is very uneven, with large boulders which have to he blasted away, and heavy tree stumps to 1.0 cleared. The Borough (iverscer. Mr Meivor. is in charge of the work which is being pushed ahead as rapidly as possible. At the time of inspection there wps a line volume of water flowing to waste from the pen stock, and it, made the visitors wish lor a direct service line to the town reservoir, a
connection which would allay all doubt of a supply for extraordinary purposes. After leaving the Forks, the party proceeded to the lake side, inspecting the pipe line at tliflcrent points. At. the upper end the pipe was running full but sluggishly. At the sec.mil hill above Coal Creek the pipe was not half full, indicating that between that point and the region of Boucher’s track. there was a blockage of some sort. It wili not he possible to remove the blockage till the new supply at the Forks is available. As soon as the new service can be used the water flowing from the lake can he cut oil', ami the pipe line be fully overhauled. ihe lake yesterday was high and there should have been, if the pipe line was clear, sufficient pressure to permit of a nee flow of water. Less than half of the normal flow of water was actually trat elling through the pioe line, and thatquantity at a very reduced velocity.
