SIR H. RHODES NOT STANDIX(

CHRISTCHURCH, March 30.

When Sir Heaton Rhodes was on a visit to Ellesmere electorate recently, ho was asked by a deputation of his constituents to reconsider his decision not to offer himself for re-election at the general elections. Sir 11. Rhodes promised to re-considcr the ii'.atter, hut he stated that before giving his reply, he would consult his medical adviser as to the state of Ids health. Sir Heaton's medical adviser in Christchurch gave it, as his opinion that it was inadvisable for him, in the state of his health, to take pari in a political campaign. Sir Heaton then consulted a well-known doctor, who informed him definitely “ that in the interest of ids health, it was imperative thai lie should give up the idea of lacing the strain of another election.”

In view of this advice, Sir 11. Rhodes has decided to adhere to his previous decision not to be a candidate at the general elections. In regard to the selection of a successor to Sir 11. Rhodes as the Reform laudidaie for Ellesmere. the usual cour-e will lie billowed. The selection will he left to the Reform constituents, and the supporters of the Reform Party in the electorate will he asked to select their own candidate.
