HIGHWAYS POLICY

St BSIDJKS TO HU 11 DUG lIS PUOliAiil.K. C illiiSiA Hl llCli. .March 30. An indication of a change of policy on the part of the Main Highways Board in the direction of giving subsidies to cities and boroughs for the maintenance of main highways within their boundaries is contained in a letter received hv the Mayor of Riccarton -Mr A. I). Kurd, from .Mr I-’. W. Furkert, chairman of the hoard. The Riecarlon Borough Council at its meeting on March 9, considered the matter and passed a resolution drawing attention to the injustice of the decision of the Alain Highways Hoard not to grant assistance towards the maintenance of arterial roads passing through cities and boroughs. A circular letter dealing with the matter was sent hv the Riccarton Council to other local bodies interested, and the eonnciVs resolution has already been endorsed by many borough and city councils. The chairman of the board, in his letter to Mr Ford, states that the T’icearton Borough Council hail been refused assistance previously because the Highways Hoard was not aware of its- position, and a circular letter was sent to county councils for the purpose of ascertaining the true limmcial oosition of the board. As a matter of fact,” the letter continues, "the result has boon satisfactory and the indications are that tint Highways Hoard will be able to view the I'.-uestion of subsidies towards the cost of maintenance of highways in boroughs in a more favourable man. iter than it has done in the past.” The letter will be considered at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council to-night.
