It is notified in this issue that all drivers of motor vehicles, including motor cycles, are required to obtain an annual license to drive as from to-morrow. The fee is os. The County examiner approved of over fifty applications yesterday. Mr Green will be in attendance to examine lurthor applicants at the County Office on Monday next, after which time those driving motor vehicles without a license are liable to he questioned and prosecuted if there is not sufficient reason for not having obtained a license.

An important discovery of a big slate deposit has been made in the 8 11 1 lei - Gorge by Messrs Burley and Lishman. The field lies adjacent to the Unller Gorge line and the main Gorge roadway. A right over the area which i.s estimated to contain millions of tons of slate, has been secured by the original prospectors mentioned. It is said to he the first field of its kind discovered in New Zealand or Australia of commercial value. Air Lishman, who is an expert slater. has left for Christchurch, where h? has arranged to form a syndicate to open up a slate quarry.
