GENERAL GORDON.
LONDON. .January 20. Forty years have passed since on Monday. .January 2f>, lssn, General Charles George Gordon died at Khartum in Ids dlst year. Thus he lullilled his own solemn warning to the JJrilish Government of that day. which asked him to scuttle and abandon the Sudanese population: *' I will not give up this city while I live.” Early in the morning of that sad day the Miahdi's troops hurst into Khartum, and the great Englishman was killed near the gates of the palace.
His death was not known iu this country till February 5. and was received with unparalleled sorrow. March ]:. being observed as a day of national mourning in his memory.
Queen Victoria received the news with the deepest indignation ; she had been earnest and insistent in pressing upon her Ministers —all in vain—the speck- despatch of relief to him.
