The fifth am! closing wool sale of the season to he held at Wellington began last night, and to some extent exceeded expectations. There was a full attendance of buyers, hut bidding was irregular. ’I he wools submitted comprised some good bright line conditioned lots and in the opinion oT some buyers was better than that offered at Napier. For this class of woo! good prices were obtained and
in most cases prices were almost, i! not actually as good '•« those ruling last month. There was a considerable quantity ol hark country wool, secih and dingy, and for this there was scarcely any demand and prices were low. I.amhs wool was depressed lor the usual Freirh competition appeared to he lacking. Bellies, pieces and oddments showing good condition, attracted competition, and good prices were realised. In the first catalogue submitted last evening, bellies and pieces made 16(1, first pieces lojd and 15:Jd. There was very little line wool offered, and generally though competition was good, prices were not no to vendors’ Ideas ol values, and withdrawals are likely in he heavy, prelmbly from 15 to 20 per cent, which has been a feature at other sales held recently. As usual the prim ipal support came from 11-cdl'erd buyers, and representatives of Continental prim ipals secured •• fair number ol bus. Local fellmon ; were o; crating and picking up odd lots that appeared cheap.' Viewed on the whole, the tone of the sale was more cheerful and brokers were well pleased, for there is an indication that pikes have reached tlio lowest level.
