A BOGUS DRUG
WELLINGTON. March 21
Donald Campbell, a salesman, was fined £5 and costs, for selling lozenges composed of charcoal, sugar, and gum, and publishing statements concerning a drug likely to deceive the public.
The Crown Prosecutor said the advertisement alleged that the lozenges were made from the juice of an Indian tree, and would cure the worst of goitre, while patients slept; also that it would cure ptomaine poisoning, and indigestion. The cost of a box of GO lozenges was about Is (id and it sold for 20s. Defending counsel said that the cost of advertising the remedy was 12s (id. which made the total cost 1 Is. The. -Magistrate commented that a person with defendant's imagination deserved a better l'atc than to be prosecuted for bis “cure.” THE OTA Tv T SEAT. WELLINGTON, March 2-1. Mr Charles J. This system, it was contended, would ronler great security against members losing benefits through being in arrears. It was resolved to amend the rules so as to make sick pay at hi per week pavable immediately alter initiation. Hitherto, sick pay has not been payable until six months alter initiation. Ibis moining lie" was remanded till to-morrow on three charges of obtaining money by false cheques at llnwera on Dec. 30th. for £4 17s, at Feikling on Jan. Bth. for 13s and at, AYanganui on Jan. loth, for £4 Bs. The polite slated accused had just been married in the North Island. Bail of £IOO in self and one security of £IOO " lis allowed. When arrested accused had 2s 8d in his possession.
