MENTAL HOSPITAL PICNIC

After many postponements on account of had weather, the elements relented and permitted the patients’ picnic to be held on Saturday. The conditions were all that could he desired, so, preceded by the Institution’s truck laden with good things, flic party (one hundred and twenty strong) set out in three lorries—a very merry company. Donations of a perishable, nature which came in when the picnic was first mooted, had, of necessity, to be consumed soon after receipt. They were much appreciated as extras for tea over several nights. The party proceeded to Air Graham’s fields at Kokatithi, where a good dinner was provided, and after a, short interval for games and for this quenching of extrordinury thirsts engendered thereby, the lorries were again requisitioned for a. run to Koiterangi, thence hack to tea and home in the cool of tho evening. I’ndoubtedly this lias been the most successful picnic that has bee'll held—oven after taking into account the many postponements ami the final “rush.” So far from slackening in their generosity, the people, of Hokitika district and Greymouth have made u, considerable advance on their previous contributions, a very pleasant feature being the increasing number of donors, proving that the public is as much alive to the welfare of its mentally ill, as to that of those suffering from any other disability.

The .Medical Superintendent of the Mental Hospital, Hokitika, wishes to acknowledge with thanks the undermentioned donations towards the patients’ picnic, and to record his appreciation of the increasing recognition of his annual appeal for assistance:— Donations in cash—Mrs Allen.
