HEAVY TRAFFIC
the new regulations.
IN FORCE ON APRIL I
The executive of the New Zealand Counties' Association met in Wellington last week, and considered the heavy traffic regulations, 'i no actingpresident (Mr J. R. Bruce), told a reporter on Saturday that by a majority the executive decided to accept the principle of a Dominion-wide license. As to the allocation of license tees, it was decided-that the principle should be adopted of distributing them according to the usage of the roads in the different districts.
On Friday Mr Bruce met representatives of owners of heavy transport vehicles from Christchurch and with them interviewed the Minister (lion J. G. Coates) who told the deputation that a Dominion license had been agreed upon. The deputation brought up the question, of the license fees for service cars. Under the scale of fees in the regulations cars carrying seven, passengers were to be charged £l2, and the next grade was £24. This meant that a car carrying eight passengers would have to pay the higher fee. An agreement was arrived at that the fees should bo graduated on a per seat basis, rising from a rate, of about 25s per seat to £2 per seat in respect of cars with a seating accommodation for JO passengers or more, the idea being to discourage very heavy vehicles. The regulations have now been finally considered and will be printed, gazetted and brought into force oil April Ist.
