A letter was reteived from the North Canterbury Teachers’ Institute, asking why teachem not the highest on the list had been appointed io various positions. It was resolved to point out that in one of the cases mentioned the highest graded applicant had I", on appointed, and that in the other, then- were -peuM liixumiitanccs.

A letter was received from the dire tor of the Institute for the Blind asking that the attention of committees be drawn to the fir: t that articles such as mats and waste-paper baskets suitable for schools, could be procured uL the institution, ft was resolved to comply with the ret]nest. A letter was received from the organiser reporting that £•*)<; bad been contributed liy the school children for apparatus for the institute.

A report was presented regarding the action taken in tmine, tion with the institution of instruction throueli the newspapers. The Senior Inspector reported that the inspectors would be visiting the schools next week and a report would lie presented later regarding the work that was being done. Jt was further resolved to draw the Department's attention to the fact that the grant promised would hardly meet the exp'eiulitn.e laeing incurred and that the- board could not carry mi the s'heme unless further guarantees were made. A special report was presented by Mr Maxwell. Acting Inspector on the Chatham Islands. It was resolved to thank Air Maxwell for bis compieliensivo report, and to express satisfaction at the good work that was being done bv the teachers under difficult conditions.
