“The production of wheat has become a very vexed question at the present time,” said Mr R. Al. Morton. retiring president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, at the annual meeting on Thursday night. The cost of production, continued Mr Morten, lias reached extreme limits, and unless those costs were reduced, there would appear to be no other remedy, from the wheat growers’ point of view, than that of the imposition of an import tax, to an extent necessary to adequately protect the wheat grower. The necessity for the extension of .scientific farming knowledge was evident, and it was quite possible that with such an extension, farmers might see their way to increase their yields, while at the same time reducing their overhead costs of production.

It appears to he the experience of the retail trade, on the authority of a grocer with several shops and a rapid turnover, that the demand drops swiftly at 3s.

As the result of .substantially lower quotations in Melbourne for Hour for export, there is an immediate possibility of a drop of up to Gd a bushel in the prices which New Zealand millers are now olfeiing farmers for wheat. During the past fortnight the price of Hour in Melbourne lias dropped from £ls His a ton 1.0. b. to £ll. After paying the duty ol £3 10s a toil North Island importers will 1.0 able to land Australian Hour at approximately £1!) it ton compared with Canterbury Hour at about £2l). A ( lirislchnreli miller (stated yesterday, says the •‘Lyttelton Times” of Friday, that lie would not be (surprised if the price of Australian Hour was reduced by a turtlier ten or lilteeu -shillings a ton within the next (tav or two as the market had a distinct downward tendemy.
