A narrow escape from a serious incident occured at the Rlackwater .Mine at Waiuta on Wednesday. Two miners Messrs Davis and Hepburn, "ere engaged in repairing the timber in a pass upwards from Xo 8 level, when a fall of stone (ame from above the timber imprisoning Davis, but Hepburn got away safely. The fall occurred iit 2.SC and it was fully X) before Davis conic be released. Davis, however, had hacked light against the wall and the ground that fell, beyond imprisoning him and reducing the aperture less and less, did him no injury and "lien released by men workii* from underneath him. Davis was not .suffering from anything beyond shock.
At the weekly euchre at the Soldiers’ Hall last, evening there was a good attendance. The evening was a benefit for Lin* IDS.A. Building Fund. The prize-winners were: Afternoon tea set (Highest scorer) Mrs . Caineion ; Ist. lady’s prize, Mrs Schroder; 2nd. prize. Mrs Bell. First gents’ prize, Mr Modhurst; 2nd. prize, Mr Gayloi*. Messrs Brookes and D. Breeze were runners up. The lucky table No. 0 was occupied by-Miss Leslie, Mestlanies Brookes and .I’nscoc and Mr A)'. Hall. The prizes were distributed after supper, the ladies' committee providing the latter. A dance followed whereat -Messrs Goodfellow Bros provided the music, and Mi Sumner was the master of ceremonies. The evening passed off very pleasantly. Next Thursday the euchre will he continued. when special prizes will be awarded. After Easter a tournament will he commenced.
'l'lii' ladies’ committee of the ILK.A. met yesterday when it was resolved to hold a Pound Day, Saturday, 128th. inst. in aid of the Building Ifund. for which about £250 is required to carry on the new additions to the Soldiers’ Hall to make it more comfortable and complete. Pound Day is verbally a gift day, the gifts to represent one 01 more pounds of any commodity, which will be sold at the shop in Be veil St. by the Committee. Gifts of all kinds will lie welcomed, and intending, donors may communicate by telephone with Mrs Benjamin, Turn-red St. or .Mrs Stuart, Sale St., and arrangements will be made to call for the supplies. A number of usdtul gifts have been offered, including articles of children’s clothing, etc. There is thus no restriction to tiltclass of goods donated. It is the desire, however to turn the pound weight of goods into as many pounds sterlim as possible, so that the freer tlie gifts the greater will lie the return. Building arrangements are now in hand, which mean that the money needed is now required urgently. .Further particulars will appear in a later issue.

Recently, a local resident found a large caterpillar, some HI inches u: length, had era" led into a bedroom window, and lie sent it on to the Curator of Canterbury Museum, enquiring as to its specie. A reply has now come to 1 1 stating the caterpillar sent belongs to i\ molh called “ sphinx convolvuli.” It is found all over the world, and is common in the Xurtli Island, but is somewhat raie m tin, South, although actually three moths had been brought in during the week from tile West Coast. '! be moth is large and a good flier, sometimes found"far out at sea. The caterpillar lives on convolvulis .and there were some leaves of this in the bottle with the specimens. The niotli is a large greyish brown insect. *

Yestordav the representatives of the State Miners’ Union, Messrs A. Marwick (President). E. McAlavey (Secretary). W. Barber (Delegate to the Miners’ Council) and English (Hcwanui Branch President) together with Mr W. Balderslone (.Secretary of the West Coast Miners’ Coiiueil) met. the- repi esentatives of the Mines Department to discuss a new agreement and other matters, including contracting, connected with the Stale Mines. The Departmental representatives were Messis A. 11. Kimhell (Under Secretary for Mines), I. A. dames. (State Mines), and O. Davis (Mine Manager). the conference being held at Dunollic at the Stale Mines Olfiee. The conference continued throughout the day, and had not concluded in the afternoon, when it was adjourned till to-day.
