Senator Curtis and Dohin.son, the Republican and Democratic leaders, called tit White House to inquire whether the President had any further business to lay before the Senate. President Coolidge replied by despatching the nomination ol Mr Sargeant. thus ending the hitter controversy which has waged for the* past week bet"ecu hintself and the Senate over Air AAarten s nomination.

The Senate i< expected to adjourn on March 18th. after a routine confirmation of Air Sargennt’s nomination.

It i» now disclosed that President Coolidge definitely tillered Air AA alien a recess appointment by a letter dated March 16. Air Warren wrote in reply, declining the odor. He said that he deeply appreciated the President's confidence. hut he felt that his withdrawal would prove of public service, and he beneficial both to President Coolidge and to the Republican Party. The general feeling is that a combination of circumstances has prompted President Coolidge to abandon tie light first, because Mr AA arren has intimated that he did not wish to accept a recc -i appointment; and secondly, that Piosident Coolidge did not wish to insist that Mr AVarren should take such an appointment. It is indicated at AVhite House that the President believed that Air AA alien would accept had he insisted on his do-

ing so. Now that the smoke of battle has cleared away, it is evident that the Senate has won a decisive victory o,et President Coolidge, who has sustained his first defeat since assuming office as President, AVASHINGTON, March 17.
