WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

COUNTY CM A Ili MAX'S REPORT. Gentlemen—l beg in report that I had ail opportunity to visit portion of the Southern-District with Lin- overseer on ,14th. and loth. March, when, in addition to inspecting the new bridge at Kakapotahi and the flood damage upstream, I was able to traverse most of the district roads at both Inter-Wan-ganui and Wataroa. Kakapotahi bridge is a very fine structure, substantially built, and a credit to the foreman ,in charge—Mr 11. Reynolds. The north approach has still to he completed (though the bridge is now usable) and the Overseer was instructed to call for tenders lor the w<*r.k for the coming meeting ol the Council. It was decided to push on with about ten chains of river bank protection above the north approach to hold the hank against further river erosion. It will he necessary, however, to do further work still higher up. and if possible to divert the main stream more to the south bank. Stuart and ! Chapman Ltd. have been asked to contribute towards the cost ol this, as the safety of their steam tramway line is i in danger. 'I he nature of the Government grant is contingent on the measure of local assistance. 1 Kvuns Creek is scouring a deeper bed under the bridge which may involve the i safety of the structure. The creek has overflowed its banks below the bridge, and spread over the settlers' laud doing considerable devastation. Overseer Milluor has been asked to advise the settlers in regard to any protection i work deemed advisable at a reasonable

outlay. Almost all the roads in the InterWnnguiiui district were traversed, including Robertson. Haddock, Wanganui Flat, Petersen Extension and La l'ontaine. The linking np of Robertson and Haddock roads is essential, and will he scheduled its an urgent work this year. Overseer Alii 1 ner is to report regarding the clearing of the road line for Petersen roqd further extension to meet the requirements of the settlers down the river. The survey of the road to the river front ijirough Air AltTnlosh’s seelion is now completed, and the Overseer is to report regarding the culvert required on tiiis short section ol road. At Watnroa the mads inspected were: Watnroa Flat Read. Adamson Road. Whale Road. Bird Road. Deelinn’s Road. Brandt’s Road, Scully Road. The new works in hand were inspected and art: progressing satnsfaetArily. Ihe use of a plough and scoop to assist with the format ion work is a very c< oiiomieal procedure. The gravel from the river bed will be collected also by scoop and loaded front a bank into Lite drays, which promises to be a speedy process. Roadmen Wliitiskie and Nolan accompanied mo through the district. and .instructions for minor works were given. Generally the roads under these foremen wore in satisfactory order. The Highways Council lias been advised that the County lorry will be granted for two or three days for Free cartage of material to improve the crossing, main south road; aba that suitable white pine slicks from Kakapotahi bridge staging will be delivered free of cost for a temporary motor bridge at Granite Creek. Ferguson’s pending the cansi ruction of a permanent bridge structure. DO IT NOW. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE. Kidney troubles are usually neglected until they become serious.
