SALARIES OF HIGHER OFFICERS. WELLINGTON, March 13 The schedule of the higher railway officers’ salai ies, which has jiim, been gazetted, indicates that there has been a, levelling up of their salaries, while a saving of £7OO per annum has been achieved by tlie variation in the remuneration of the three highest officers of the Department. The net saving by the redistribution of salaries of the eight officials enumerated in the “ Gazette,” notice amounts only to a little over £IOO per annum. At one time the salary of the General Manager of Railways was £3OOO per annum, but it was subsequently reduced during the period of the “cuts” in public servants’ salaries to £2700. Each of the two assistant general managers received £IOOO per annum. At the beginning of this year, following the retirement of Mr McYilly, the position of General Manager, together with the appointments of the two assistant general managers, was abolished and, a board of management, consisting of a chairman and two members, substituted. Mr F. J. Jones, formerly chief engineer of the Department, was made chairman of the Board, and Messrs J. Mason and H. Sterling, first and second
assistant general managers respectively, were appointed his two associates on the Board The new schedule of salaries provides that the chairman of the Board of Management shall receive a maximum of £I3OO per annum, and each of the two members £1137 10s, rising by two annual increments- one of £O2 10s and another of £so—to a maximum of £1250. Tile new scales for the branch managers are ns under (the old rates being shown in parentheses):
Chief mechanical 'engineer (in charge of locomotive, carriage, and waggon branch), £1137 10s (£1137 10s). Chief engineer (in charge of maintenance branch), £1137 10s (£020). General superintendent of transportation. £IOOO (£790). Chief accountant, £837 (£7OO 10s). Comptroller stores, £837 (£715).
