One tragedy, a shark scare, several narrow escapes and many line rescues, were associated wiLli surf bathing at the Sydney beaches on Sunday. A party of live young men entered the water at Collarin', several hundred yards from the flag of the safety area, and they were soon in difficulties. Two managed to scramble ashore, while two others were rescued by the life savers, hut there was no trace of the fifth, and there is little doubt that he was tarried out and drowned. His name was Ernest Hayes, aged 20, of Beecroft.
