THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Egypt ani> Sudan
Major Diigrnore, an authority on Egypt and the Sudan writes: Egypt is doing all in her power to try to get possession of the Sudan, because she lias seen during the past years of British administration the enormous potentialities of the apparently desert land. ■‘The almost limitless supply of cotton, that with proper development may he grown, will alone prove a source of enormous income, and Egypt, sees this, and realizes with disgust, the opportunities she has missed.” In his final conclusions Major Dugniore is emphatic. '* Egypt,” he writes, ‘‘has been given every opportunity for development. Let it take advantage of its good fortune, let it take its place in the world, and go ahead as it should do, hut under no consideration must if have the Sudan. If the Egyptians wish to continue under the conditions of joint control with Britain, well and good, otherwise let us carry on alone the work of preparing the Sudanese for self-government. British obligations are sacred. The people, so long downtrodden. have at last found happiness and security. They have been given every reason to he hopeful of the future, and it is Britain’s duty to see that their hopes are fulfilled.'
