AOBTKALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. THE LILY DALE TRAGEDY. .MELBOURNE, Alareli 13. Howard 1 Vernon, who was arrested in connection with the l.ilydale tragedy, was remanded on the charge of murdering Bent.
The police gave evidence that at the time of his arrest, Vernon made a statement that Bent had been keeping company with his (Vernon’s) sister-in-law. He had seen them in circumstances which lie had considered improper, and he had warned Bent. Thereupon, on the night of the tragedy he had followed them, carrying a loaded rifle. He saw them under circumstances which he considered not right, and lie fired at Bent with the intention of frightening him. The bullet entered his head. He (Vernon) and his sister-in-law attended to the wound and went for n doctor. Nearing a doctor’s hmi.se. lie became frightened and he went home, leaving Bent lying where he was subsequently found.
