SCULLING.

AUSTRALIAN AXI) N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION THE X.Z. OARSMEN. SYDNEV, March 11. The prospects of the New Zealanders in the aquatic events on Saturday are regarded favourably by the local critics. Both St Clair, the sculler, and the eight in the crew, have put in a lot of liard training, and are in excellent condition. They are considered a fine, hefty lot and great triers. Their whole work is steadily improving day by day. Despite their hard training they have pint on weight, and will row at an average of about 12st. 15lbs. They are very confident in themselves, and believe they have a good chance of winning. In this confidence they are supported by a number of rowing men, including Dick Coombes.

The opinion is expressed in some quarters that their boat is too old. and not of an up-to-date type for the competition. but the New Zealanders themselves are quite satisfied with it. ami Coombes. after careful comparison, endorses this view. The visitors have received every possible attention and assistance iu the matter of quarters, training and mastering the intricacies of the course.

Of the six completing eights. Mosman, the champion crew, are regarded as the strongest opponents of the New Zealanders.

A fairly general view among the rowing men is that if the visitors can hold Mosman for a mile, they have an excellent chance of winning.

St. Clair is regarded as a first-class sculler, with a real oarsman’s seat and stroke. His work on the river shows steady improvement. He gets plenty of pace from his boat, is a great sticker, and a fine finisher.

Coombes is among those who consider liis chances rosy.
