GREY HARBOR SCHEME
TO COST £BI,OOO.
GRLYAIOUTH, Alareh 11
The lung waited report of Air F. \V. I'Tukcit, Engincer-in-Chiuf to tho Public Works Department, Air \Y. Ferguson, formerly Engineer to the M cllington Harbour Board, and Air Blaii Alason, formerly Engineer to the Dunedin Harbour Board, was laid on the table at the meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board last evening. The .Cikniiman (Mr J. Steer) briefly outlined the recommendations, which he said, were on similar lines to those of the late Sir John Coode. The Board, mi the Chairman's recommendations, decided to have the report, which is of a voluminous nature, consisting o! thirbv-two typewritten foolscap) sheets, printed and circularised in all the public libraries on the West Coast. Anyone wishing to see the report can then do so, or call at the office of the Harbour Board for a copy. The report H to lie considered at a special meeting of the Board, to he called in the near future. Summarised, the recommendations are as follows: —- (1) Breakwater extension. Extension of Lhe north and south breakwaters is recommended. In the case ol the north breakwater, the distance of the proposed extension seawards is 220 feet. The completion of this work will thus reduce the overlapping of the south breakwater, and give more scour in the fairway.
(2) For a channel across Preston Ro.id. between Karoro and Lima Alcana Lagoons, to connect the two lagoons. (3) Dredge tho lagoon to a depth ol' three feet below low water.
(-D .Subsequent extensions to Lot-1 loiukwaters are provided for. the to tal additions being: North. -T-’U leet Foul h, Min feet.
(6) After Die result of the lagoon works lias been ascertained, and the extensions to the breakwaters have been completed the report recommends that the dredging of the area between the North Training Wall and the C’obden shore be proceeded with and the question of deepening and enlarging the Cobden Lagoon be considered. (7) A considerable amount ol other reclamation work, particularly in the vicinity of Elmer Lane, is provided lor. By tile adoption of the report, in conjunction with the dredging of the lagoon, the c.irrving out of an extensile reclamation scheme is made possihlc.
The report sets out clearly the cost of the various undertakings, the lota amount of which is 081.7110- The cosl Of the north breakwater extensioi alone is £17.270. The quantity of mat erinl required to complete the reclamation is 1 .obO.OOO cubic yards am the time occupied will lie four and . half years.
It is confidently expected that, witl the extension of the north hroakwatei and other work, there will he an incalculable improvement in the depth o water, estimated at seventeen feet a low water (spring tide) and twenty six feet at high water.
