The raising of the bank rate was generally expected after the increase in the New York rate last week, which caused considerable disorganisation in the money markets. To-day’s increase is intended to check the withdrawal of American money from London. Money, though plentiful now commands higher rates, but it is generally understood tlmt London and New York are closely co-operating and iears of unduly bigh rates in tbo immediate future are groundless.

After the prosecution had closed in the Hobbs case the Judge overruled Ike defence’s contention that Sir Han •Singh’s presence was necessary to sustain the count of conspiracy to cheat and defraud. The triennial elections of the London County Council were held yesterday and the results so far declared show numerous Labourite gams with corresponding losses among the piocressires who, politically, are synonymous with the Liberals. The present figures are sixty Municipal Reformers otherwise Conservatives, twenty-seven Labourites and five Progressives. THeie are still thirty-two results outstanding. The last Council consisted of eighty-two Reformers, seventeen Labourites. an twenty-five Progressive*.
