The chief interest in the Hobbs conspiraev trial centred in the evidence of Newton, who said that the idea was that Sir I lari Singh would pay something in order to avoid divorce proceedings. Arthur explained that Singh’s succession to the throne of Kashmir would he jeopardised if there was a scandal. Mr Curtis Dennett subjected Newton to a most scorching cross-examina-tion. It is a diabolical defence.” Newton odmitted that he was arrested in America in 1012. but said that lie was immediately liberated. ■Counsel asked: Was the charge laid by a lady? 'Newton declined to answer this queston, as not bearing on this ease. He' suggested that bis character liad already been sufficiently besmirched. Justice Avorv intimated that he would consider' whether the evidence was admissable. The hearing was adjourned.
