CONFIDENCE trick IN Till' STRAND. LONDON, Dec. 2
Mi Reuben Gordon, an Australian staying ai the Imperial Hotel, Russell .Square, is the latest victim of confidence tricksters, who watch the movements of visitors to Australia House. At Bow-street Police Station on Saturday Air Gordon told how lie, unsuspecting, handed over COO!) to two men lie had met a few hours previously. MrGm-don’s “friends” posed as men who were returning to Australia, ami convinced him that there would be a financial gain in turning English credit into Australian money.
Mr Gordon parted with the money in the Strand, and waited for a long time outside Australia House before he became suspicious. .Many have been robbed outside the Australian headquartres by. similar tricks. Most of the victims have been people about to return home.
A BISHOP’S TIIRONE. LONDON. Jan. 3
The Queen will attend a service in Norwich Cathedral on Sunday, January 25t1i.. when the ancient stone episcopal throne, built, it is believed, by the first Bishop of Norwich. Herbert de Losinga. 891) years ago, is to he rededicated. The throne lias been renovated by Dr Bertram Pollock, the present bishop. The Queen worked the medallion which includes the episcopal monogram on ihe cushion of the throne. The throne is in the middle arch ol the Norman apse, behind, hut at a considerably higher level than the high altar. and it 111111111. unis a striking view across the altar through presbytery, choir, and nave. It is to lie redecorated for occasional use. such as during spcical services held in the choir.
THE RIGHT TO KILL. LONDON. Februarv 23.
In quashing a sentence of 12 months’ hard labour passed on Israel Hussey, a coloured man, for unlawful wounding, the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Howart, said at the Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday : “ The law is that in defence of liis house the owner or his family may kill a trespasser who would forcibly dispossess him, kill in self-defence a man who attacks him personally ; with tin's distinction, however, that in defending his house he need not retreat as in other cases of self-defence, for that would he giving up his house to his avdersary. In this case that important disinctioii was not brought to the jury's attention, so that there may have been a miscarriage of justice.” Hussey was released and expressed his pleasure by praying Heaven “to bless your lordships.”
In his review of the case Lord Hewart said it appeared that Hussey had been ordered to vacate his room, hut he refused to go without proper notice. Two people attempted to turn him out, taking as methods of persuasion, a hammer, a spanner, a poker and a chisel, and Hussey fired a revolver through a hole in the door, injuring his assailants.
His case ivas that lie had to protect his wife and family, and lie produced to the police a seven-chambered revolver, while in his pocket was a pamphlet entitled “The New Kent Act Explained.”
