Yesterday large numbers oi visiting
members of the press were shown <>ve> the Government nurseries ami forest reserves. During their stay here they have taken great interest in the method of propagation and growth of tho thick woods that clothe many of the bills behind AYhakarewarewa, and have received much information from o!li-e-'rs of the department. In particular, (he rapid growth of Californian redwoods has been a great surprise where the locality is suitable, and there is not too much wind. Redwoods at Rotorua grow nearly as fast as Pinna ins.g.us; they far outstrip native trees. In the reserves there are specimens 70 foot m height, which could he milled to-morrow if required. Vow visitors realise the enormous amount of work clone m treeplanting. There is an idea of constructing a road through the plantations so that not only may a drive through these forests he added to the usual' sight-seing trips, but the pub be may also obtain an insight into the magnitude of the operations of the department. _
