With the dismissal of Ratclill'e. which came after 25 minutes’ play, New South Wines’- chances of reaching six hundred looked black, hut the last wicket partnership added 34. Scott provided the only bright patch ia the New South Wales tail. He should have been caught by Howell when bis score was 2, but made 26. Ihe innings lasted 481 minutes. Kilner was most successlul as a howler. His most dangerous ball was a slow one, which hung in the air. so that the batsmen tapped il into the fieldsmen's hands. The English fielding was not up to the usual standard. England commenced their second strike seven minutes helore lunch. Sandham and Whysall opened vigorously. fifty runs appearing after thirtyone minute.-' play, hut with 'Whysall’s departure at 57, the play steadied down ,:md the second fifty took 53 minutes to compile. Sandham played sound, attractive cricket, and displayed good judgment in placing his si rakes all round the wicket. Woolley commenced slowly, and had ;i couple ol narrow escapes before reaching double figures. The batsmen did not oxerl themselves io running between the wickets.
