Knowles, the author of a recent work on economic development is of opinion that the race that controls the tropics will control the most important economic resources of the world in the coming century; in fact, lie goes so far as to say that '‘whatever the far future may hold, the twentieth century from the economic point of view .should belong to "Che tropical colonies with their enormous potentialities, now made available by scientific discoveries and railways. As far : Great Britain is concerned she has been mainly preoccupied during the nineteenth century with the development the self-governing colonies and India.
