The weather was fine, but hot. when Hendren and Gilligan resumed England’s first innings against N.S.W. today. The wicket favoured the-batsmen and gave little assistance to the bowlers. The outfield was good. Hendren carried on attractively. He was placing his strokes with precision. He reached his 50 in 70 minutes’ play, by means of powerful drives and nicely executed cuts. Hendren took no risks, but be waited for the loose ones. Chapnlan succeeded Gilligan, and nlavcd aggressively all round the wicket. But for good outficlding, bis total would have been much greater. He hit five fours. . . Five hundred runs were lunstccf for 303 minutes play, then Hendren reached his ccnturv in 135 minutes. He and his partners did not hurry themselves between the wickets, and they allowed manv single runs to go altogether. Hendren went to the crease when the board showed 338 and ho played a sterling, chance-loss innings, lasting loi 192 minutes. His score totalled ICo. It included 1-1 fours, i England’s tail did little, the board ' showing 7 for 592, and then 9 for 099. The highest partnership was that of Sandman and Woolley—2o2.
